During the early 1930’s through the mid 1960’s there were many different approaches African American’s took for achieving social changes, and the Civil rights they deserved. Many great African American leader’s such as Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X, and James Baldwin contributed towards the betterment of blacks living in America. Aside from individual African American leaders there was also groups that fought for black civil rights such as The Black Power Movement, Black Panthers, and Civil Rights Activist. Other events that transpired during this time period had also effected the civil rights movement in America. Martin Luther king Jr, and his followers stood for non-violent protests, despite being victims of threats. Although King was highly recognized, and praised amongst the black community not all African American’s agreed with his ideology of obtaining their civil rights through peaceful non-violence protest. Therefore other movements were created such as the Black Power Movement which was a group that emphasized that blacks should claim their civil rights through violence. Overall Martin Luther King Jr had an major impact on the civil rights movement, and will always be remembered for his famous impactful “I have a dream speech” which was his vision of black & white people coinciding with one another, and ultimately living in peace together where blacks do not have to worry about being judged by their skin color, but instead their actions. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
From the speech “I Have A Dream,” Martin Luther King addresses the audience to unite with dignity and serenity: “We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence...we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force” (King 49). King’s goal for his audience is to will rise up together in a nonviolent protest and demand equality with the whites. Even though some African Americans might want to seek revenge towards the whites, King encourages them to stay soulful because violence would just make matters worse. Additionally, Martin Luther King also proclaims “Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today….their destiny is tied with our destiny.We cannot walk alone” (King 49). In contrast of Malcolm X, King proposes that African Americans must not dislike nor hurt the whites, but work together with them in order to gain liberty for all. Without the whites’ assistance, it would be difficult for African Americans to let their voices be heard because many people had racial discrimination towards African Americans back then, and they were seen as a lower class than the whites.
