To get a sense of what it is to be human, at least in the evolutionary world, we need only to compare our modern selves to our ancestors such as the Neanderthals. The Neanderthals were our closest hominin relative and died out thousands of years ago. Like us, they walked on two legs, hunted , made fire and tools, and lived in shelters (caves). They were more advanced than many of us imagine they were thanks to the way they are portrayed in the media. They had brains similar in size to ours, they stood fully upright (not hunched over), and had a surprisingly complex culture. In a skeleton found in Asia, the discovery of a hyoid bone in the the throat raised the question of whether or not Neanderthals had language capabilities. There has been much debate over this and many different theories, but the most widely accepted is that they were capable of producing human speech sounds, but whether or not they used this speech to communicate in any kind of language is still largely up for debate. In height, Neanderthals were roughly about the same size as modern humans, but did not live as long as modern humans. A Neanderthal who lived into his or her 40's was considered to be long lived, which is comparatively short to our much longer lives of roughly double that. Genetically, Neaderthals and humans differ in their DNA structure both in the mitochondrial DNA and in the nuclear DNA. The significance of the DNA evidence is that it is crucial in determining whether remains that are found are truly Neanderthal or an older hominin relative.
As for their behavior and culture, fossilized remains have been found of groups of Neanderthals together, indicating that they likely had large groups of hunters and/or gatherers and that they had social group containing equal numbers of adult males and females as well as children, adolescents and even infants in their groups. Research speculates that the modern humans and Neanderthals coexisted in Europe for around 5,000 years. In the Article “Redrawing Humanity’s Family Tree” by John Noble Wilford, describes how two different skulls challenge the theories of human origins and migrations. The Central African skull, that dates back to nearly 7 million years ago, was assigned to a whole new genus and species because of its apelike and evolved hominid species. The 1.75-million-year-old Georgian skull shows evidence that the first hominids may have been intercontinental travelers who set motion the migrations that occupied the whole planet. Finally a third skull was found that is the same age and shares a resemblance but, the size of the skull suggests that the brain was smaller than expected for H. erectus.
The fossils which passed the amino acid tests were called “transitional” elements between the two species. They represented a part of Europe where the Neanderthals and early humans would have more than likely encountered each other. The same DNA sequence was found in Neanderthals and early humans, but also in ancient cave bears from Croatia and Austria. This made the researchers skeptical of their findings and decided to test for mtDNA stands. When the fossils were further analyzed, the researchers found that the mtDNA embedded in the Neanderthal fossils was of a different strain than that in the early humans, which was of course, different from that of the ancient cave bears.
The evidence that supports that Neanderthals inter-bred with Homo sapiens is that of a skeleton that was found of a young modern child. The skeleton was determined to be that of an early modern human child, but the skeleton had Neanderthal characteristics as well as modern human characteristics. It was determined that if this child had Neanderthal traits then Neanderthals were part of his ancestry. That would mean that Neanderthals inter-bred with Homo sapiens. Beyond that there has been DNA testing of bone fragments that suggest that even though Neanderthals were different from Homo sapiens they weren't so different that they could not breed with each other. Over the year’s research showed that we coexisted with Neanderthals and out beat their species. Many believed that Neanderthals where like the stereotypical unintelligent and wild caveman. The next species to appear were the Homo erectus which might have descended from Homo habilis. They were the first human whose fossils were found outside of Africa. They also had larger brain than the species before them. Homo sapiens sapiens came after the Homo Neanderthalensis; they are the only human species around.
