Abstract
Communication is important to most professions and human relations in general. When it comes to a career in the Criminal Justice field, you must have great communication skills. Possessing these skills can keep you out of bad situations, and might even save your life. Communication can be verbal or non-verbal and to be able to do your job well, you need to know how to overcome potential communication barriers.

Are they stiff? Maybe they are really wiggly and all over the place, touching their face, hair or moving their feet around. Are they standing in front of you with arms crossed? What are their feet doing? There are many ways our body language can give us away. Too much or too less of something, shows that you are nervous, scared or defensive.
When writing your report or any other documents other people will need or see, it is important to use proper spelling and grammar. The vocabulary used should be words that are easily understood by many, if you make your document filled with police jargon or overly technical terminology, the common people would have a difficult time relating or being able to understand.
Diversity in Different Cultures
American women are legally recognized as equals to men, and in most male and female relationships they are treated as an equal or a member of the team. In many other cultures, women and children are looked at as second class, or even property. Here is America it is against the law to hit your spouse but in many other countries it is OK, this treatment is often acceptable to do to children too. Also, most American’s believe in eye contact and handshakes, but other cultures may find this to be rude and disrespectful.

Being able to communicate effectively builds trust, respect, enhances learning and accomplishes goals. Within my job role the level of communication I have to uphold has to be one of paramount importance. I have a role of great responsibility dealing with clients and their families or advocates, internal staff and external agencies. Therefore, my communication has to be clear and concise whilst I am conveying instruction and information. I consider communication to be successful
A caution gunshot shot into the air, a verbal demand to get down on the ground, and a sign applied on a correctional facility wall that flows, ‘warning: you are under arrest,’ all have to forms of interaction. I do need to be aware that I will need to adapt the way I communicate with different audiences because different people all require me to connect with them in a variety of different styles, i.e. adult-adult, child-child, adult-child. By using effective communication I am able to help clear up conflicts, build harmony and overcome any communication gaps which, themselves can create conflict amongst people.
The understanding of those barriers to which prevent information from being received can allow for better communication throughout the department.

Communication is primarily an exchange of information, ideas, or thoughts. This paper will focus on the process of verbal and nonverbal communication as well as the components of each. It outline the formal and informal channels of criminal channels. This paper will also list the different barriers to effective communication within a criminal justice organization. Finally it will cover strategies that can be implemented to overcome communication barriers within criminal justice organizations.

Communication is a fundamental relationship building skill in the workplace. If people don’t communicate well they limit their ability to connect on any meaningful level. It’s important that I show respect to those I work with. Communications should be conducted in an appropriate, open, accurate and straightforward way. Workplace relationships become a lot stronger when people can clearly and effectively communicate what they need and allow others to do the same. In the criminal justice profession, there is a huge number of different populations. Each will have needs that will vary from population to population. Different populations can vary in size, gender, ethnic background, etc. Today we will focus on three populations which include victims of sexual violence, communities below the poverty line, and communities that are primarily comprised of people who speak little to no English. As a criminal justice professional, you will have to have the ability to identify specific needs of each population and handle these needs in the appropriate manner.
Communication issues are also a challenge for criminal justice agencies. There are two communication barriers one is individual and the other is organizational. Individual communication issues are that a person’s own interpretation of a message may not be what is meant. An organization’s culture can be a barrier in communicating with another organization. The court system, police and corrections have different jargon that is used within their culture. This sometimes makes communication difficult between the organizations as well as with the public. To handle these challenges a leader must be an affective communicator (Duelin, 2010).
There are many purposes for communication within the very diverse criminal justice departments and agencies. Communication is a means of connecting people or places together and if not conveyed just right could be misunderstood and misinterpreted. The purposes for communication between the sender and receiver are to solicit information, to train, explain, or inform, to educate, mediate and persuade and last but not least to problem solve. Those were only a few modes or purposes of communication, the list goes on and on. Communication can be in the form of verbal, written, electronic, or something as simple as body language. Whatever conveys a message to a receiver is a form of communication. However it is conveyed or interpreted is another story and sometimes miscommunication leads to bad decisions. It is very important for a sender to take time and make sure the receiver understands all the information as well as if the receiver does not understand something questions need to be asked to obtain the correct information. In the criminal justice field it is imperative that all information is received and understood in the manner in which it is meant to be, if not it could actually be the difference in a life and death situation.
