In the “Empathy Gap” by Sherry Turkle the author claims that because human beings are obsessed with being digitally connected that the empathy gap has opened making people less empathetic towards each other. Turkle reports that humans do not appreciate the value of talk which is being undermined because many people fear a real conversation which does not allow them to control the situation including giving someone their undivided attention which allows a people to become vulnerable. Turkle does not disagree that our decreased capacity for empathy can be scary she argues impressively that by showing weakness and vulnerability will help us become more empathetic. Communication theories are important to learn and understand. Learning these theories helps us apply the theory to our own life. It helps our critical thinking skills as well as benefits one to understand the value of research that has been accomplished in this field. Understanding communication theories can help us make sense of our daily life experiences. There are three Communication theories that I have studied that have touched on my personal and professional life. These theories are Communication Privacy Management, Social Penetration Theory, and Organizational Culture Theory.

Michael Argyle believed that interpersonal communication was like learning how to drive a car. Michael Argyle said that human communication is important as it is a two way process that involves two people sending and responding to each other’s non-verbal and verbal messages. Argyle came up with the theory of communication. This theory was put in place so that people who are having a one-to-one conversation can understand what they are saying to each other. He also came up with this theory as he believed that communication builds an understanding of listening, observing and reflecting what the other person is saying to them.

This assignment will start by discussing two well-known theories known as ‘the cycle of communication’ by Michael Argyle and ‘the stages of communication’ by Bruce Tuckman. Firstly, it will look at Michael Argyle’s ‘The cycle of communication’.

Being able to communicate effectively with more people feels good and is empowering. To be able to communicate well with others and get ideas clearly across to them is a satisfying feeling; likewise, to be able to understand their ideas.

Communication is an essential tool needed to advance several major processes in society. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, communication is the act or process of using words, sounds, songs, or behaviors to express your ideas, thoughts, and feelings to someone else. Such interaction between human being is significant due to the innate fact that we as humans are social beings. Communication not only aids human beings in expressing ideologies, but in everyday duties such as education, work, medical care, and other key aspects. A lack of communication is dangerous in many circumstances.
