Dealing with enemies has been a problem since the beginning of time. “I never killed anybody,” Gene had commented later in his life, “And I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Best Buddies is a non-profit organization that promotes the good through one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It has created lasting relationships between students with disabilities and their peers, therefore, helping to improve the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded. It has also provided employment opportunities for those with IDD, allowing them to be productive members of the labour force. Lastly, Best Buddies has given those with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to realize their potential by encouraging them to become leaders.

This piece is based off the central theme of A Separate Peace by John Knowles. It is a commentary on the current state of the world but at the same time, on a deeper level, it makes a statement about human nature. The central theme of A Separate Peace is about the inescapable nature of war. It defines war as a central part of human nature and society. War does not only refer to the political state of the world, but also can be broaden to wars between parties, people, and even one’s self.

Working at non-profit organization requires an employee to understand their company’s mission and values. At Easter Seals Southern California (History, 2015) the agency’s mission is to provide exceptional services to all people with disabilities or other special needs and their families and to ensure that they have an equal opportunity to live, learn, work and play in their communities (History, 2015). ESSC provides a number of services and the department I work in is Autism Services, which provides therapy, treatment, and training to individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This is an organization that truly holds up the values of being a not-for-profit organization.
