Water, like food, is a necessity for human life that is used for many purposes such as agricultural, industrial, and domestic systems. While water is a common element around the world not all of it is clean and able to be consumed or used by humans. With only a percentage of the world’s water being clean and the use of water increasing, the availability of water around the world has become a common issue in the developing and even the developed world. This may be a smaller problem in areas close to clean water sources compared to areas far from a clean water source but, the availability of water is not strictly based on location, it also depends on the specific political and social needs and issues of the area as well. Water is a necessity to basically every living being in the world, both human and nonhuman. Without this valuable resource, almost everything would perish in the world. Roughly 1.2 billion people worldwide lack access to potable water. Around 80% of ocean pollution enters our seas from the land. Any human activity can have an effect on the quality of our water environment. “One fifth of the world’s population consumes four-fifths of the world’s resources, leaving four-fifths of the world’s population with only one-fifth of the available resources” (Environmental Justice). Personal care products and pharmaceuticals, such as birth control pills, painkillers and antibiotics, are causing concern on the water quality.

In a world that’s over 70% covered with water, it’s hard to believe that there could ever be a water crisis. However, with 98% of the Earth’s water being undrinkable, that only leaves less than 3% of this water drinkable and with over 7 billion people on this planet, well, it can start to get scarce. Ever since humans have been on this Earth, especially during the Industrial and Agricultural Revolution, they have become the number one largest polluter on the planet. Fresh drinking water makes up a small portion of the total water that is on Earth. Only 2.5 percent of all the water on Earth can be classified as fresh drinking water, while the rest of the water on Earth is saline. On top of only being a very small amount of fresh drinking water available on Earth, less than half of this water is accessible. Because of human’s inefficient use of water coupled with our exploding population the amount of water available to humans has continued to decrease.
