Is Hamas a terrorist organization or a legitimate political group? Before this question can be addressed, a brief history of the Hamas organization is required. This brief history will cover the beginnings of Hamas, key points of the charter establishing Hamas, and the different interconnected sections of the Hamas organization. Once this is done, the question “Is Hamas a terrorist organization or a legitimate political group?” can be examined. This will be done by dividing the question into two separate questions. The first question examined will be “Is Hamas a terrorist organization?” and the second question examined will be “Is Hamas a legitimate political group?” Hamas is a Sunni organization established in the State of Palestine …show more content…
The core beliefs of the Hamas charter call for the annihilation of Israel in favor of an Islamic state in Palestine (Hamas, 2014). The language in the charter depicts Hamas as an anti-Semitic, terrorist organization. This is one reason the United States has designated Hamas as a terrorist group since early 1993. Additional reasons for the designation include Hamas’ use of violence, opposition to interests of the United States, and Hamas’ collaboration with Iran and other designated terrorist groups. Hamas is currently operating fundraising campaigns, directing and supporting operations against Israel, and organizing political support from within the United States. Hamas accomplishes this through the use of covert cells located within the United States (Hamas, 2014). At the same time, Hamas leaders have considered attacking American interests located in the Middle East. These leaders are members of Hamas’ political council which is responsible for guiding and organizing terrorist acts. And yet, Hamas’ political council is responsible for Hamas winning the majority in the Palestinian election in 2006 (Hamas, …show more content…
The most recent evidence of this is an article written by former President Jimmy Carter and former Irish President Mary Robinson, recognizing Hamas as a military force and calls for Hamas to be recognized as a legitimate political group (2014). This is not a new idea in which Hamas is a legitimate political group. There have been several instances of different United States government departments recognizing Hamas as a legitimate political party. In April 2013, a Department of Education textbook states Hamas as a legitimate political group (The Commentator, 2013), as well as a federal judge in 2006 (Gerstein, 2006). The list continues of supporters of Hamas being a legitimate political group. The reason there are so many supporters is due to what Hamas has accomplished as an organization since 2006. In 2006, Hamas won the majority in the Palestinian legislative election. Since then, Hamas has embraced democracy and focused on different social programs for the Palestinian people. Hamas leadership stated that the charter is unable to be amended to reflect the true view of Hamas (democracy) today and that the charter is just a part of
-Palestinians—most Palestinian organizations like Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) just want to have their own state and Israelis withdrawn from the occupied territories but extremist like Hamas wants to takeover the whole Israel and either make Jews as second citizens or push them to the sea.
In the post Osama bin Laden era al-Qaedist ideology is flourishing across the Arab world. A significant development has been the rise of al-Qaeda offshoots in the Middle East. The Abdallah Azzam Brigades franchise has increasingly become a noteworthy actor in terrorism. On May 8th, 2012 Thomas Nides, Deputy Secretary of State designated Abdallah Azzam Brigades as a foreign terrorist organization (Nides, T.R. , 2012). Abdullah Azzam Brigades may have only recently been added as a foreign terrorist group; nevertheless the organization has deep roots, lethal capacity, and is capable of contributing to supplementary instability in the Middle East.
When translated, Hezbollah means “The Party of God.” However, as we examine the history, demographics, agenda, methodology and target choices and affiliation assignments and contributions of Hezbollah, we discover that this organization was established with perhaps one goal in mind and that is to strike fear into the hearts of those that oppose an Islamic state in Lebanon. Therefore, as the self-proclaimed “Party of God,” based on the history of their activities and actions, they appear to be something entirely different.
In this article regarding HAMAS, I will be writing about their origin, beliefs, failures, successes and how the group transformed from a religious organization to a political one. The group has been fighting for their beliefs for over two decades to an extent that they have become a political organization. Based on the research on the history of HAMAS, the organization took a political dimension from a religious one when it became victorious in the 2006 democratic elections. Consequently, rather than just being a religious organization, HAMAS is considered a political power since it won 76 seats of the 132 member parliament.
HAMAS, an Arabic acronym meaning “Islamic Resistance Movement”, is the name of the socio-political organization currently in power over the Gaza Strip. For decades Jews & Muslims and Israelis & Palestinians, often one in the same, have fought for control over the region. Each have killed thousands of the other, destroyed infrastructures and used underhanded tactics to gain an advantage. Nations such as Japan, the European Union, the United States and (of course) Israel classify the group as terrorists, while nations such as Turkey, Russia and Switzerland do not. (King, 2010) Many factors are taken into consideration before a Nation-State denounces an organization as a “terrorist group”. A profile of HAMAS may help make clear why it is
The Hamas, also known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, or IRM, is a terrorist organization group located on the Gaza Strip of Israel. Although it is unknown of how many people are involved in this terrorist group, it is known that more than ten-thousand people are supportive of this group and its actions.
HAMA (Harakat al-Muqawammah al-Islammiyya) refers to a terrorist association of the Islamic Resistance Movement created over 20 years ago, in 1987. The group has over 1,000 members at this time and classifies itself as a nationalist/separatist and religious group. However, many critics argue (and rightly so) that it is a terrorist organization and that far too many people are averse or in denial of this fact. However, technically, the United States is one of the many nations who view it as a terrorist organization. In fact, professionals and scholars in the realm of international relations largely view Hamas "as an obstacle to the Arab-Israeli peace process and the goal of a two-state solution. As a result, Western nations, including the United States, have tried to embolden the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority while isolating Hamas, which has historically kept strong ties to Iran" (cfr.org). On the other hand, Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations have been paused since 2010 and they are constantly held in a precarious balance even without the presence of Hamas, some argue; for instance the friction between Israel and Hamas in Gaza in late 2012 has consistently chipped away at the prospects for renewed talks in the future.
Hamas (Arabic: حماس Ḥamās, an acronym of حركة المقاومة الاسلامية Ḥarakat al-Muqāwamah al-ʾIslāmiyyah Islamic Resistance Movement) is a Palestinian Islamic[10] organization, with an associated military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades,[11] in the Palestinian territories and elsewhere in the Middle East including Qatar.[12] Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by the European Union,[13][14] Canada,[15] Israel,[16] Egypt,[17] Japan,[18][19][20][21][22] and the United States.[23] Australia and the United Kingdom have designated the military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, as a terrorist organization.[24][25] The organization is banned in Jordan.[26] It is not regarded as a terrorist organization by Iran,[27]
The terrorist organization I chose is Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda translates into, “The Base, The Foundation or The Fundament". This terrorist organization was established in 1988 and is still going on to the present day. This is one of the most active and dangerous terrorist groups out there today. Al Qaeda is worldwide but they are mainly located in the Middle East.
In the late 1960s secular movements such as Liberation of Palestine started targeting civilians outside the immediate area of conflict. Once Palestine leaders realized they could not defeat Israel using military forces alone. This is where they moved away from classic guerrilla warfare towards urban terrorism. Radical Palestinians took advantage of modernized communication systems to launch a series of hijackings, kidnappings, bombings, and shootings (Moore, 2014). These movements provided a model for numerous other secular militants and religious movements which resulted in the spread of terrorist techniques worldwide at the end of the 1970s.
Although Al-Qaeda and ISIS are known to be terrorist organizations, the author strongly disagree that one of them is not a terrorist organization “at all” Cronin states that although ISIS uses terrorism as a tactic, it is not a terrorist group, but rather a “pseudo-state” because it owns territory
Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal declared in an interview with CBS News that Hamas is willing to co-exist with Israelis, but not under the IDF occupation of Palestinian territory. Mashaal stressed that the root cause of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the military occupation of the Gaza Strip and not religious fundamentalism or anti-Jewish sentiments. He told CBS' Charlie Rose, “We are not fanatics; we are not fundamentalists. We do not actually fight the Jews because they are Jews per se. We do not fight any other races. We fight the occupiers.” Mashaal also re-iterated Hamas' demand that Egypt and Israel end the blockades of Palestinian sea ports and airspace.
This group was created in 1978 and continues to expand its power today. It began as a branch of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood. This terrorist group has several goals ranging from creating a Islamic state to continuing the armed struggle against Israeli occupation of Palestine territories. Their acts of
According to political scientist Robert Pape, the PLO is an exemplary illustration of the efficacy of terrorism, providing a prototypical for why terrorism of all forms is a judicious strategy as an instrument of political influence . However, Pape dwindles to identify a defining characteristic of terrorism; the disconnect amongst a terrorist groups objectives and outcomes. As American philosopher Loren Lomasky has discerned, one of the most profound realities about terroristic activity is the magnitude between efficacy and aspiration. Lomasky also noted that virtually “none of the instances of terrorist activity is there any genuine prospect that the attack on person or property will aid to advance the claimed political ends” . Whilst the Palestinians
The Islamic Resistance Movement, also known as al-Harakah al-Muqawama al-Islamiya (Hamas), has proven to be an extremely agile and capable terrorist organization in Palestine. They benefit from a deep-rooted sociocultural infrastructure, highly lethal tactics and a complex hierarchy of leadership, all of which have allowed the organization to prosper for over two decades. As where 90% of terrorist groups wither and rapidly falter, Hamas has been able to quickly adapt to the constantly changing political and social environment of Palestine . This evolution, has always assured the organization a generous group of adherents. The necessity to change based on environmental stressors has likened it to a “multipronged organism, which has
