My first step when I enter Alfred Middle School is to meet with my talented staff. It’s important that I have a positive working relationship with my most important, which are my teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff. I’m pleased to hear that my staff has a great work ethic; therefore, I will be able to rely on them for support. During that initial meeting, I ask the staff for their input for the school's mission. The mission statement is most important because it establishes our purpose and why we do what we do. Furthermore, it’s imperative that we have a consensus on the statement because I will need everyone to buy in on our mission. This initiative is the segue for the vision of our school, which is the next step in my process for school improvement. Our vision gives the stakeholders what is to be expected from our school in the future. With that said, I would create two groups in effort to support of shared governance of the school. I will listen to my staff, and I would encourage participation in the decision-making process. As a counter balance, the other group will be a School Advisory Committee, which is a combination of parents, business partners and community leaders. Their primary job is to advise and recommend improvements for the school. After I have established the mission, vision and the governing groups, I will move forward to address the immediate needs for …show more content…
First, I would take an inventory of the school resources, and seek out areas that need immediate attention. I would ask shared-governance to provide me a list of improvement. Afterward, I will look at the budget and set aside money for improvements and slowly implement the changes over the course of the next few years. Furthermore, I would return a consolidated list and ask both groups to prioritize which items that will be fixed
As the committees are in progress, I would look at the resources needed to achieve the goals that are being set. I know that not everyone feels comfortable sharing in a staff meetings, therefore, I would continue those individual personal relationships, as well as providing surveys (love survey monkey) that ask the staff what they believe would help them grow to be able to support our new mission, vision, and high achievement for ALL students in our new school. I would also want to include sharing information and education for our parents and community, so I would set up parent and community (2.3b) meeting to share data and provide education on schools SMART goals. I would ask "What is the best way, as I principal, I can help support

Echeverria and I were at the School Board Retreat at the District Office. This year our Superintendent invited union leaders to attend the retreat as a symbol of collaboration and change in the district. It was during this board retreat that I learned that many of the district administration were unaware of the districts vision and mission. Ms. Echeverria and I discussed how the district goes about changing the Districts vision and mission statement. 2 years ago our District Motto change over night from “Every Student, Every Minute, Every Day" into “Believe in the Power of Education” the change rocked the districted and put people in a very precarious position. Ms. Echeverria stated that the motto only changes after the district vision and mission changes, which is outlined in Board
Every school district has board meetings throughout the school year. Unfortunately, many parents, community members, & school personnel do not attend such important meetings because they don’t realize or understand the importance of such board meetings or how informative they can be. According to Kankakee School District (2017), the Kankakee School District Board of Education is composed of seven elected members, who were elected by the citizens of Kankakee to serve a four-year term that do not receive no salary for they services, are committed to ensuring a quality of educational excellence that will enhance the opportunities and challenges facing today’s student and additional responsibilities that board members include are selection of the District superintendent, developing general polices according to wishes of the community and requirements of law, hiring school personnel based upon recommendation of the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel, adopts salary schedules, approves funds to finance school operations, must adopt and review the annual operating budget for the District, and setting the property tax levy to produce adequate funds to meet the District’s financial needs ranks among the responsibilities of the Board of Education (Retrieved from https://www.ksd111.org/domain/68). For this paper, the Kankakee School District board meeting will be used, information learned from board meeting, use of
I was looking at the school as one component ‘Preschool/Kindergarten.’ Thus learned quickly of the numerous components to consider for a schools financial and educational success. At the end of the discussions, it was agreed unanimously to make changes to a middle school servicing 478 K-4 Students feeding into two middle schools. 3 Full-time Kindergarten teacher and 1 full-time double session Art/Technology teacher. To save money on benefits.
Pine View Elementary School’s mission is to empower student to reach their maximum potential in a challenging and inspiring environment. The faculty and staff work hard to create an atmosphere that fosters a love of learning in an atmosphere that is conducive to creating responsible, productive citizens.
As the director/board member the organization's mission statement is extremely important, not only does it describe what we stand for, but also it can and will be used to promote us in the community and it will also be used as a teaching tool for our parents, teachers, and students.
Our educational institution at Whitehorse High School includes several stakeholder groups. The two stakeholder groups that I would like to wright about are the parents and the teachers. The parents make up the Student Community Counsel (SCC) that helps the principal and faculty make important decisions about school improvement directives, and the overall welfare of their students. Parents in our community want to see their students succeed. They want to see the school improve and their students’ scores to go up on the benchmarks and end of year assessments. The parents also have a huge interest is seeing the school grade improve from an “F” to an “A”. Parents want to see their students get recognized for the successes that they achieve. They want to see their students succeed in academics, athletics, and other interests that their students are pursuing. They have a huge investment in seeing their students have an enjoyable social life.
Possible Solutions. The system needed to be completely revamped. Policies and procedures needed to be developed and implemented in order to reestablish commitment and direction. The first step was to identify the problems, then develop sound solutions, (Berger, et al., 2010). Interviews and surveys needed to be conducted and data needed to be analyzed to identify the discrepancies, (Berger, et al., 2010). The school required a new administrative staff that had a proven track record of effective leadership, (Berger, et al., 2010). The new leaders would need to be strong in their convictions in order to successfully change the negative behaviors. Change needed to be implemented to provide new structure in which to build upon. Roles and responsibilities needed to be redefined, communication was needed to develop new ideas and create a positive learning environment.
The last thing that an administrator needs to have firmly grounded in their thinking is how a school system is supported and makes a lasting impression on students. The way that seems most impactful is by using the model set forth by the Public Educational Leadership Project. New and current administrators must have a strong sense of how their school functions and reaches the needs of all students. The outer ring must be taken into consideration. Who are the school’s stakeholders? What is the culture like at the school? How is the structure of the school set up? What are the resources available in the school and community? What systems in place are helping the school move forward or holding the school back? All of this must be kept in the back of your mind while looking at the center of the model.
The new leader, became and administrator. The school looked good on the surface, but the relations were eroded. Teachers who had perfect attendance started to be constantly absent from work. Moreover, the educators and staff who usually worked after hours without extra pay, did not want to put any more effort than the one they must just to get an effective evaluation. The vision and mission stayed the same for the two years that I worked under her supervision. Even today, it’s still the same one. The school grade dropped from an A school to a D school in less than two school years.
In order to effect change within my school and transform it from a culture of isolation to a culture of collaboration, first I would ensure that all stakeholders are professionally on one accord (shared values and goals). I can assure that we are on one accord by creating a school mission, a shared vision, collective commitments and goals. The mission is why an organization exists, the shared vision is what the organization hopes to become, the collective commitments (values) are public declarations of what we will do to achieve our vision and goals (monitor progress). These shared values, goals and moral purpose will be the foundation of all decisions made within the school building.
In my time devoted to this practicum, I have learned how to use my voice and speak up for what I think or would like to see. I have also used my voice to reach out to parents and our school staff. For our AdvancED visit in January, a group and I lead a discussion on our values and beliefs as a school. In three consecutive sessions we were able to produce a list of three commitments that we believe our staff and students can live out day to day.
The first step involves establishing a number of goals, which ultimately define the school’s mission. Moreover, the goals need to be achievable and functional. More importantly, the mission needs to be drilled into all stakeholders for support. This includes the staff, the students and
I will be examining how the administration of my school assesses the workforce of my school, works with the teacher unions and makes sure the school action plan is in place to attain the vision of the school. With all the moving parts of the school, I will be looking at how the administration keeps the focus of the school in the right direction.
