TRAVEL For some travelling can be a way to escape it all and even find love. “I went not expecting to meet the love of my life,” said Army Staff Sgt. Jason Thompson, a photojournalism instructor at the Defense Information School here. He met his wife while on a cruise in the Caribbean. Travelling provides a way for creating relationships and experiencing new cultures, while escaping the hardships of daily life. Thompson did just that. Thompson has been taking trips to the Caribbean since he was a sophomore in highschool. He has been on 10 cruises so far. At first, he would cruise with his family, but as he got older he started to go with his friends, and eventually he met his wife on a cruise. …show more content…

“I never would have met them before.” While on the cruise he met his wife, and they began seeing each other. “I just wanted to go have a good time, have some fun and I met my wife,” Thompson said smiling. Thompson was trying to escape his daily life and take a load off from the strenuous schedule the military can have. Thompson was stationed in Fort Worth, Texas. “My favorite part is just disappearing from life, disappearing from my responsibilities in life. Just taking a moment to breathe, relax and just let my hair down,” he said. While cruising the Caribbean Thompson learned from the locals how to truly relax. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jonathan Carmichael has also turned travel inconveniences into something beneficial. Carmichael, an instructor at DINFOS, used to travel the world as a presidential videographer. He described it as “Hours and hours on a plane and in motorcade vehicles with these people and going through hardships.” While on the plane, usually Air Force One, Carmichael had the chance to form special bonds with those around him, both military and civilian journalists. “We were really tight,” he said. “When you’re doing that over and over again with the same group of people you’re bound to bond and we definitely did.” Many people would see travelling on long flights as dull, but they can be a chance to learn more about others and create lasting bonds. “I have a lot of lifelong friends from that tour,” Carmichael said. While at one of the events he was recording in Rome, he was told there was a problem with his visa. He immediately handed off his camera and ran to the passport office wearing a full suit. It took a week for them to fix his passport. He had to stay an extra week in Rome. This minor inconvenience allowed him to spend a week in Rome and see all the attractions
