The book Eleven Seconds by Travis Roy tells the story of how Travis Roy’s hockey career ended in eleven seconds. Travis broke his neck at a C4 level and became a quadriplegic at the age of 20. Throughout the book you learn about the physical and mental journey he takes as he learns to change his perspective to adjust to the world he now lives in. Travis was born in Maine in 1975, and from the beginning knew he wanted to be a professional hockey player. His father being a hockey coach most likely had an influence on him getting involved in hockey at such a young age. Later on he also went to a charity game being held as a fundraiser for him where the arena was packed. He made a surprise appearance and shook hands with all the players. After his long journey he was finally home where there was now an addition on his house where he was supposed to live. Adjusting was hard, Travis felt like his life was over and this was all he had left to look forward to. As upset as he was he never wanted the to draw attention before a game. After the first period BU was winning, but the coach and players all knew that they weren’t playing hockey like they had been the past 6 weeks. They ended up losing the game 6-4, the team wasn’t overly upset though and still went out afterwards. Travis decided to go this time and to his surprise enjoyed himself a lot more than he expected. Later on he was invited to give a speech which mostly was about what he wanted to do to help other people with paralysis. Some of the money is donated to finding a cure, and other money is donated to helping those live with paralysis live a more comfortable life. Overall everything that happened upon returning to BU helped him to rediscover
