Outcome 1
Explain the functions of assessment in learning and development?
The function of assessment and development is primarily used to provide a cycle to enable you to see a student’s progress. Assessments can be formative or summative; formative checks would be assessed throughout the course of the student whereas summative assessment would be the final process, or examination for the student. The purpose of assessment is to enable the assessor to see whether or not the student is gaining an understanding of the subject against the criteria, which is followed.
Define the key concepts and principles of assessment
Assessments concepts must include:
S –Specificity, ensuring the task approached is precise
M –Measurable, can progress

The aim, reason and purpose for assessments is to allow the students as well as the assessor to see that they are making progress and this also allows them to track where they are at; allowing themselves as students to themselves goals to work towards.
Explain the responsibilities of the Assessor
The main responsibilities of an assessor can be identifies within three categories.
Planning- an assessor must be able to organize and plan lessons, including formative assessments to allow the assessor to check the learner’s progress and providing feedback before the summative assessment at the end of the learning.
Assessing- Marking the students work and providing a mark, grade or percentage; this allows students to track their progress. Assessing should be followed via criteria, and must be fairly marked using precise guidelines.
Feeding Back- Regular feedback should be provided to the learners throughout the course, the more advice which is provided the more the student would have a better understanding of where to work harder.
The duties of the Assessor involve planning, managing and delivering assessment, and always keeping a learner-centered approach to
Assessment plays a significant role in the learning experience of students. It determines their progression through their programmes and enables them to demonstrate that they have achieved the intended learning outcomes. It is assessment that provides the main basis for public recognition of achievement, through the awarding of qualifications and/or credit.
Unit 1- 1.1, 1.2-This is a reflective account of the things I have done, experience and knowledge I have gained throughout the assessor 's course mainly during the process of assessment. First, I would like to describe the definition of assessment, its key concepts, stages to show the knowledge and understanding I have gained throughout the course. An assessment is a pre-agreed formal session with the learner. Assessment is judging performance against an agreed standard and is also a way of finding out if learning has taken place. It enables yo assessor to ascertain if learner has gained
In my point of view assessment is a testing tool by which a teacher or assessor can use to detect the outcomes of teaching, learning or assessment process with the learners by
The assessor’s role is to judge whether the evidence from the learner meets the criteria for the relevant units being assessed and that the evidence is Fair, Valid and Reliable.
3) Deliver learning: the assessors responsibility is to deliver assessment which is appropriate for the learners, takes account of individual needs and which has clear aims and objectives. The assessment activities should be appropriate and varied to appeal to learners with different learning styles. Assessment resources should be well prepared, sufficient for the number of learners and used to support the learning activities.
The function of assessment in learning and development is primarily to provide a measurable barometer for the students progress.
1.1 Assessment is about judging if, how and what level of learning has taken place. An assessor's function is to decide if a learner has developed skills, knowledge, understanding and competence in a particular field as well as if the learner is showing the attitude required for the application of the learning within that field. Assessing is not the same as evaluating. Rather than the focus being on the programme or course the learner is on (evaluation), the focus is instead on the learner and their development.
What is the purpose of initial assessment and what kind of methods could be used? Evaluate these methods with reference to the ways they can help in the overall objective of achieving learning goals. How can you ensure learners are kept motivated and working towards these goals?
Assessments should contribute to a student’s education and learning by including students in the learning process educators are able to assist and extend students learning (SCSA, 2014).
The function of assessment in learning and development is to provide a measurable way of planning and supporting students’ progress. Assessment is carried out by means of checks and tests carried out throughout the course. Assessors should provide feedback throughout ensuring that learning is occurring and the learner is at the correct level. It is also important that assessor’s decisions are also consistently reviewed and internally and externally verified.
From the research they conducted, the Assessment Reform Group (2002) has identified ten key principles in relation to assessment for learning. The two that stood out when looking at assessment to meet the learners’ needs are:
Assessment is used so that I can check that learning has taken place and to what extent. I use assessment at all stages of the learning process in line with organizational requirements; firstly by conducting an initial assessment with the learner. This shows me the level at which the work to be completed needs to be set and gives the learner a starting point. A diagnostic assessment is completed by the
Assessment is often thought of as a punitive exercise. But the purpose of assessment is to ensure that students meet specific standards of progress and to rectify learning deficits before a child falls too far behind. Assessment can also identify a child's strengths as well as his or her weaknesses. As well as comparing the child's performance with his or her peers, the teacher can assess specific learning needs, learning styles, interests, aptitudes, and other critical components of the child's developing learning personality.
Assessment is to judge someone against set criteria to establish whether they are capable to perform a particular activity/job. Assessments can take many different forms i.e. assignments, oral and written questions or professional discussion all of which help to demonstrate the knowledge the individual has developed through learning, these all support the decision of whether the individual is competent or not.
Assessment can become part of the learning activity which can be modified to monitor student progress.” (“Assessment, Articulation, and Accountability”, 1999)
