Goal 1: Identity: Demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social identities. What is one thing that you have already used or can use in the future to support Goal 1? One thing I have done and continue to do is by celebrating ALL holidays. In some schools they only really celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter, but there’s so many more that other cultures celebrate and maybe your students do at home like Eid, Kwanzaa, and Diwali etc. It’s important to celebrate all of them and show diversity so you can support children in developing and being comfortable within their home culture and within the school culture. Goal 2: Diversity: Express comfort and joy with human diversity; accurate language for human differences; and deep, caring human connections. What is one thing that you have already used or can use in the future to support Goal 2? One thing I could do Is by having more conversations about not just similarities, but differences . We would have conversations like identifying what their family looks like who takes care of them, What they like to eat at home, and what they look like as opposed to others. Goal 3: Justice: Recognize unfairness, have language to describe unfairness, and understand that unfairness hurts. What is one thing that you have already used or can use in the future to support Goal 3? For this goal I would and have already provided opportunities for children to understand and practice skills for identifying stereotypes, teasing, name-calling, and behaviors (isolation, discrimination) directed at themselves or at others like issues of gender, race, ethnicity, language, disability, economic class, age, body shape, and more. Goal 4: Action: Demonstrate empowerment and the skills to act, with others or alone, against prejudice and/or discrimination. What is one thing that you have already used or can use in the future to support Goal 4? For this goal when thing I have done and the children respond well to is reading stories about
leaders and characters who have stood up to social injustices like MLK, Malcom X, Rosa Parks, and more. One book I like is “Boycott Blues: How Rosa Parks Inspired a Nation.”
