Session 5 Discussion Two reasons why you think that people find New Spirituality appealing? Life can be full of ups and downs, good and bad. I think people see New Spirituality as a great way to seek comfort and peace. They practice things like yoga, focusing on stress relief and releasing emotions. However, Myers and Noebel said, “New Spirituality teaches, everything is consciousness” (Myers & Noebel, 2015, p. 128). Myers and Noebel also mentioned an advocate for New Spirituality, Deepak Chopra, who listed some “qualities of pure consciousness: silent and peaceful, self-sufficient, awake, possessing infinite potential, self-organizing, spontaneous, dynamic, blissful, knowing, and whole” (Myers & Noebel, 2015, pgs. 128, 129). This can appeal to some because they see themselves, you, and I as the answer to life and glorify themselves. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” ( Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011). Another thing I think may be appealing is that New Spirituality believes you get into heaven by “being a good person.” Still, John 14:6 says, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ( Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011). So, it takes more than just “being a good person” to get into heaven. At least one reason why New Spirituality cannot coexist with Christian teaching. In other words, on what issue do they contradict each other so that one worldview must be right, and the other worldview must be wrong? Before I answer the question, a certain bible scripture comes to mind: 2 Timothy 3:5 says, “Having a form of Godliness but denying its power” ( Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011). This scripture comes to me because New Spirituality knows of God, but they chose to deny his very existence. Myers and Noebel said, “To New Spiritualists, “God” is personal only in that our God experiences are subjective and personal” (Myers & Noebel, 2015, p. 129). The Bible teaches something entirely different about God’s nature and character. In Exodus 3:14, God told Moses, “I Am who I
Am.” ( Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011). In other words, “I Am complete in-and-of Myself.” It’s a clear statement of self-determination. The Apostle Paul further affirmed God’s self-existence in his speech to a religious society in Athens: “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” I feel Christianity is right, and New Spirituality is wrong.
