Using the research framework presented in the article, discuss how you would design a study comparing believers and non-believers on a public health issue of your choice. Specifically: 1. How would you justify the research to a secular audience? 2. How would you ensure objectivity in the research? 3. What types of references would you include in the literature search? 4. In general, how would you identify believers as opposed to non-believers? 5. How would you discuss any findings which suggested faith had a significant positive effect? Conducting research has the same value and importance as implementing the findings related to research. The article explains that a variety of approaches to research is needed in the field of health as health care is multidisciplinary. 1 Although the implementation on the findings on a research study is vital, how the findings are obtained are equally important as the findings. Vaccination of larger groups reduces the risk of infection of a disease. Vaccination against covid19 was available since December 2020 in the United States. 2 As covid19 cases were quickly rising, the FDA approved the distribution of the vaccine to anyone who was 16 years or older, prioritizing the elderly and those who were immunocompromised. Misinformation, vaccine hesitation, and health issues are reasons people are hesitant to receive the covid19 vaccine. To maintain objectivity in research, it is imperative to eliminate bias among research subjects. In addition, funding for the research study should not be sponsored by a pharmaceutical company that distributes the vaccine. Religious beliefs and personal stance about vaccinations should be available to the researcher in the early stages of data collection. However, after all the information is collected and studied, all the details should be identified and matched. The type of references needed that will be utilized to conduct the research would come from peer-reviewed articles, evidence-based data, as well as previous studies completed on vaccine refusal. Medical records from health department and medical centers can also provide accurate data to determine whether someone choses to be vaccinated or not. Believes and non-believers will be identified as the ones who decide to receive a vaccine and those who decline the vaccine. Individuals who are still on the fence about getting vaccinated should be placed in another category. Separating into other categories will allow better results that will lead to the success to the research study. People decide whether to believe or not in vaccinations based on their beliefs in science. In a religious community where there is diverse group of people from different professional backgrounds use the teachings from the bible along with evidence-based findings to decide about vaccination. Isaiah 58:11 states, “The Lord will guide you always, he will satisfy your
needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. 3 ” As Christians, we should rely on God to give us wisdom and guidance to strengthen our frame on these types of issues. 1. Hello Zhan, I also chose covid19 as a current example of a public health issue. I would also keep in mind which organizations provide the funding of the research study. For example, many have suggested that the monopoly of pharmaceutical companies on vaccine development is unfair due to the majority of covid19 vaccines have been funded by taxpayers’ money. 1 According to Okereke, there has been evidence that the involvement of pharmaceutical companies corrupts medical science where these companies conduct their own research studies and integrate information in medical science. 1 For example, the cost of life sustaining drugs such as insulin continue to be on the rise thanks to pharmaceutical companies that profit from people who suffer from a chronic health condition. Although there is not cost to get vaccinated against covid19 in the United States, the funding used for the research and development of the vaccine is funded by all taxpayers. Entitled 1. Okereke M. As you stated, in some countries choosing to have an abortion is considered a criminal offense. For the past decades, it has become a politicized topic where the church and other parties have campaigned to restrict women’s access to have an abortion. As a result, a lot of misinformation has been produced by these groups where inaccurate information is spread through the media, research studies are funded by certain groups who oppose abortions, and medical centers who provide women with biased counselling. Crisis pregnancy centers, are a non- profit group that aim to persuade women from having an abortion by using misinformation and deceptive practices that could lead to a delay for women to receive appropriate reproductive care.1 No matter where you stand on this topic, I believe we all deserve scientific facts in order to make a responsible decision. 1.
