Eagle Research - Evaluation Form 1.1. What is the APA formatted reference for this article? Preudhomme, J., Lu, C., & Martinez, R. (2012). Collegiate Professional Pilot Programs: Acquisition and Use of a Level Six Training Device in the Academic Environment. Journal of Aviation/aerospace Education and Research, 21(2), 21–29. https://doi.org/10.15394/jaaer.2012.1330 1.2. What is the article about? Summarize the article in one to two paragraphs. As the growing demands of traveling, the ongoing pilot recruitment is also rising within those years. Under this situation, the authors think that collegiate aviation program should come up with a better solution to deliver low-time pilots getting ready to airline industry. According to H.R.5900 - Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2010 , which is known as “1,500 hours rule”, however, might be inadequate to meet the needs in this industry now. Therefore, FAA allows specific academic training courses to be credited to total required hours. Level six flight training devices are those feature a full cockpit replica of the aircraft being simulated, including controls, instruments, and systems, which can be large difference from price to price. Authors try to evaluate the most efficient level six flight training device to break the gap between school to practical airline. 1.3. What is the research problem statement (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? To what extent does the problem statement communicate the research problem to the reader?
According to FAA, some academic training courses could be credited that candidates could apply airlines with lower flight hours than 1500 hours. Currently, there are 110 flight training institutions could provide this compensate training courses (Education Reference, U.S., 2010). 1.4. What is the intent of the researcher (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? To what extent does the intent of the study communicate what the researcher will do about the problem? Researchers would like to identify a cost-effective way to train airline pilots pursuant to the proposed law (Jeanyves Preudhomme, Chien-tsung Lu, Richard Martinez, 2012). 1.5. What are the research questions or hypotheses (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? Does answering the research question or drawing conclusions on the hypotheses resolve the research problem? “What is the most cost-effective FTD that will meet the requirement of FAR Part 60, at a collegiate flight training program?” (Jeanyves Preudhomme, Chien-tsung Lu, Richard Martinez, 2012) 1.6. Describe the quality, depth, and organization of the literature review. In this research, there’s no specific quality, depth showed. However, researchers have mentioned their design is based on experiment by a regional airline hiring a dozen of professional pilot undergraduates who had less than 500 hours of flight time from University of Central Missouri (UCM) in 2008. The result of this experimental approach showed that three of twelves failed or experienced difficulty at one phase or another.
1.7. What is the research design? Is the research design correct for the intent of the study and type of data used in the study? If so, why? If not, what research design and data analysis do you recommend? To what extent does the data collection and analysis plan gather and assess the data to answer the research questions or hypotheses? The research methodology chosen is Action Research Methodology (ARM). The procedure of ARM is a loop design, which is also called as “Look-Think-Act” loop. Following is the flow chart of ARM retrieved from the article (Jeanyves Preudhomme, Chien-tsung Lu, Richard Martinez, 2012): 1.8. Are the results, conclusions, and recommendations logical and reasonable based on the outcomes of the data analysis? If so, why? If not, what corrections do you suggest? The result of this research, per ACM’s “Look-Think-Act” process, flight training institution could evaluate the value prior to purchasing. An example was given as by immersing in complex systems, students could satisfy type rating requirement. As an evidenced by new ATP requirement, airlines could expect that the benefits of Flight Training Devices (FTD) could be affordably break the gap between experience and collegiate
students in certain prospective, such as familiarizing transport category aircraft system, Flight Management System (FMS), and Crew Resource Management (CRM). 1.9. Describe the quality of the format and style of writing. What improvements would you suggest to the author to improve the document? This is a topic that most of airlines would eager to get more outcome. By doing training in FTD, it would bring more profits to airline companies financially. In my opinion, it would be more valuable if there’s more longitudinal study tracking time by time according this research design, it would be s useful database in aviation industry.
2.1. What is the APA formatted reference for this article? Keller, J., MENDONCA, F. C., & Cutter, J. E. (2019). Collegiate Aviation Pilots: Analyses of Fatigue Related Decision-Making Scenarios. International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace, 6(4), 9 –. https://doi.org/10.15394/ijaaa.2019.1360 2.2. What is the article about? Summarize the article in one to two paragraphs. Fatigue is one of the vital elements causing accident or incident in aviation. This is also highlighted as Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvement (NTSB, 2019). In this study, researchers focus on collegiate aviation pilots because current researches are mostly focus on Part 121 or military. Collegiate aviation pilots, however, those who enroll five to six courses per semester plus extracurricular activities, might have duty hour excessing 14 hours per day. This study aims for flight instructors work and study in college at same time. Furthermore, researchers wish by doing this survey, the collegiate pilots would acknowledge their fatigue situation, utilize mitigation strategies to make better go or no-go decision. 2.3. What is the research problem statement (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? To what extent does the problem statement communicate the research problem to the reader? The problem to be addressed in this study is we all know fatigue is the main human factor that causes accidents and incident. And lacking sleep is the primary reason resulting in fatigue. Although there’s a reduction of accidents causing by fatigue since 2016 (NTSB, 2019), currently database is mostly based on part 121 and or military. Researchers would like
