1 Ways to be an Effective Educator Marisol Espino College of Education, Grand Canyon University UNV-108: University Success in the College of Education Dr. Michael McCabe October 22, 2023
2 Ways to be an Effective Educator There are many ways to become an Effective Educator. Like dispositions, ethics, skills, traits, and attributes are key for present and future educators to follow. The definition of disposition is “the values, commitments and professional ethics that influence behaviors towards students, families, colleagues and communities and that affect student learning and achievement, motivation and development, as well as the educator’s own professional growth.” (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). This essay will talk about why professional dispositions of learners are important in educational settings, from my past educational experience how have the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) been applied to classroom practice, and what skills, traits, or attributes have I seen demonstrated by effective teachers from my past educational experience. Now this next paragraph will talk about why professional dispositions of learners are important in educational settings. Professional Dispositions of Learners In this section, the following question will be answered: Why are Professional Dispositions of Learners important in educational settings? Looking back at my educational experience, I notice how my teachers did have one or more of these dispositions. There was one time where a teacher was showing dedication. My class and I were needed to do well on the state tests. This teacher started off as a substitute teacher and then after Christmas break the teacher became our history and biology teacher. That semester it was crunch time, he needed to add in information from the first semester since we really were not picking up the material. We had those two classes back-to-back, and we had a lot of ground to cover. Which once we took our tests at the end of the school year, he told us that we all passed our tests.
3 This teacher showed dedication because he wanted us to do well on the state exams. In the “Professional Dispositions of Learners”, in the section where it talks about Dedication it states, “a dedicated educator is constantly seeking that which will ultimately benefit the teaching and learning that occurs in the classroom.” (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). I believe that this teacher followed was a dedicated educator does. In the next section, it will talk about the application of Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE). Application of Model Code of Ethics for Educators In this section, it will talk about the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) and answer the following question: From your past educational experience, how have the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) been applied to classroom practice? The Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) “serves as a guide for future and current educators as they encounter the complexities of PK-12 education. The code establishes principles for ethical best practice, mindfulness, self-reflection, and decision making.”, (National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, 2015). There were times where we would ask our teachers in our classes to let us know how we are doing in the class before progress or report cards were to be sent out. There would be time before the grades are due to add in any missing work, correct any corrections, or any extra credit. The teacher would call us up one by one and tell us our grade and if we are missing any work. Some of my classmates would ask the teacher to just say the grade out loud but the teacher would say they couldn’t because they could get in trouble. This was the educator protecting the confidentiality of the students record. If the teacher were to have said the information out loud, they would be violating this code. In this final section it will talk about the skills, traits, or attributes of effective teachers.
