Telehealth during COVID-19 in rural areas of the US One of the themes that I would like to discover is a challenging access to the healthcare during COVID -19 in underserved areas. Telehealth applications assisted during pandemic, when rural areas had inaccessible healthcare or decreased number of physicians relatively to the population in underserved regions in the US. 1 “When a patient and a clinician are not in the same room at the same time, telehealth refers to the use of electronic data and communication technology to provide care”. 2 In 2019, telehealth made up less than 1% of all Medicare Fee-for-Service outpatient visits in the US; by April 2020, however, telehealth accounted for 46% of all visits, while in-person ambulatory care visits have decreased by 60%. 2 3 Telehealth has the potential to improve care accessibility and lower the risk of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) transmission. 4 In order to assist health facilities with telehealth capabilities to grow their telemedicine offerings and carry on offering care throughout the pandemic, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services removed geographical constraints and improved reimbursement (2,3). To identify patterns in the use of telehealth, the CDC and HRSA examined data from 245 health centers that voluntarily participated in the weekly HRSA Health Center COVID-19 Survey for 20 weeks in consecutive weeks. When COVID-19 instances were declining, weekly telehealth visits decreased and then plateaued as cases increased. 4 In addition to improving continuity of treatment, telehealth is a viable strategy for increasing access to care. It can also assist mitigate public health risks and stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory infections. 3
