Question 1
: How do the ideas presented in the film
connect to what you know about anti-bias education?
At the beginning of the documentary, there was a clip where each student drew a
self-portrait of themselves and they discussed their differences and similarities. This is
something that I really enjoyed seeing. So often in education, you see educators ignoring
the differences that children have and consider that anti-bias education but I think that is
so damaging to the child in the future. From what I have been taught by my mentor
teacher at my job right now talking about and celebrating each child's differences is so
important at a young age so when they are older they understand that yes they may look,
or think, or have grown up differently than their friends but those differences are exactly
what makes that child perfect in their own way. Later in the video, they talked about how
all of the students were very interested in one of their peer's dads being in a wheelchair so
they brought in someone in a wheelchair to come talk to the children. These are the kinds
of things that are essential in an anti-bias classroom so that a child knows that everyone is
equal and you don't treat someone differently just because they may differ from you in
some ways.

Question 2:
What new ideas did you get that
extended or broadened your thinking?
One idea I got from this video that broadened my thinking is how much children do
actually understand. I have always planned on incorporating these ideas into my lessons
when I begin teaching my own class but I have questioned how much of it children would
be able to grasp. But hearing the children in this video talk about everything they have
learned and openly express that they understand and appreciate everyone's differences
proves that I was very wrong about that. Children are more capable of understanding this
stuff than many people give them credit for but we will never see that if we don’t give them
the chance.
c.
Question 3:
What challenges or puzzles have come to
mind for you?
One of the challenges that I thought about throughout this video was the issue of parents
disagreeing with their children being taught certain things at such a young age. In one part
of the video, the teacher brought up the concept of having two moms or two dads. A few of
the kids said that someone couldn't have two moms or two dads and another child was
very upset because he does. That is why it is so important to teach this at a young age so
that they don't see it as different in the future. But there are many parents who would be
very upset about concepts like this being taught. I can imagine this causing conflict in the
future and putting me as an educator in a hard position. You are going to have some
parents excited that this is being taught because they don't want their child to be treated
differently or they don't want their child ever treating another differently because of things
like this. But there will always be people in the world who don't believe that differences like
this should be celebrated and don't want their child to learn about it.
