COMMUNICATIONS IMPACT ON AVIATION 2 4.3 Case Study Grand Canyon Collision 1. Summary In this case study we will address the incident known as The Grand Canyon Collision as well as the underlying factors, how they were mitigated over time and recommendations myself and others suggest to improve them going forward. 2. Problem The main problem that was addressed in the research paper labeled The Grand Canyon Collision appears to be the lack of proper communication between peers during a time in history where it was paramount to the success of each party involved. This could stem from something as simple as assumptions of others, complacency, or to a complex lack of understanding as a whole of the setting at hand. As stated in the report from doney.net “In 1956, U.S. airlines were involved in four near-crashes each day, mostly in clear weather…. The early consensus pointed toward the traffic control system as the cause of the tragedy.” (2014). 3. Significance of the Problem The importance surrounding proper communication and understanding of the situation that allowed this horrific incident to take place were made clear as time went on and we have since then improved our abilities when it comes to tracking, monitoring, and maintaining aircraft locations both while flying IFR and VFR.
COMMUNICATIONS IMPACT ON AVIATION 3 4. Two Alternative Actions Some alternative actions that could have been put into place to help mitigate these are somewhat how flying works today in that ensuring the altitude of TWA 2 resulting in the 2,000-foot gap from the cross traffic or if the air controller at the time had known to share the information at the same level at which he had received it, allowing for a better overall flow of communication and likely less accidents overall. Enacted by President Eisenhower the Federal Aviation Act of who’s primary focus was on safety the CAA was also abolished and replaced with the Federal Aviation Administration or the FAA (Lawrence et al., 2015). 5. Recommendation As the aircraft and flights have scaled so drastically over time, so have safety measures put in place at airports all over the world. As the commercialization and evolution of airports all around the world into what resembles a strong similarity to some of the systems in place around the US airports. As stated in our book Aviation and The Role of Government “Large airport terminals boast 85 million passengers passing through annually safely” (Lawrence et al., 2015). While we may have many near incursions still on a daily basis the fact that our numbers have increased by 10-fold in the last 20 years shows that not only the communication has improved considerably but that the importance of understanding newer rules and regulations in place surrounding VFR and IFR ratings as well as their applications through new
