COMMUNICATIONS IMPACT ON AVIATION 2
4.3 Case Study Grand Canyon Collision
1. Summary
In this case study we will address the incident known as The Grand Canyon Collision as well as the underlying factors, how they were mitigated over time and recommendations myself and others suggest to improve them going forward. 2. Problem
The main problem that was addressed in the research paper labeled The Grand Canyon Collision appears to be the lack of proper communication between peers during a time in history where it was paramount to the success of each party involved. This could stem from something as simple as
assumptions of others, complacency, or to a complex lack of understanding as a whole of the setting at hand. As stated in the report from doney.net “In 1956, U.S. airlines were involved in four near-crashes each day, mostly in clear weather…. The early consensus pointed toward the traffic control system as the cause of the tragedy.” (2014).
3. Significance of the Problem
The importance surrounding proper communication and understanding of the
situation that allowed this horrific incident to take place were made clear as time went on and we have since then improved our abilities when it comes to
tracking, monitoring, and maintaining aircraft locations both while flying IFR and VFR.
COMMUNICATIONS IMPACT ON AVIATION 3
4. Two Alternative Actions
Some alternative actions that could have been put into place to help mitigate
these are somewhat how flying works today in that ensuring the altitude of TWA 2 resulting in the 2,000-foot gap from the cross traffic or if the air controller at the time had known to share the information at the same level at which he had received it, allowing for a better overall flow of communication and likely less accidents overall. Enacted by President Eisenhower the Federal Aviation Act of who’s primary focus was on safety the
CAA was also abolished and replaced with the Federal Aviation Administration or the FAA (Lawrence et al., 2015). 5. Recommendation
As the aircraft and flights have scaled so drastically over time, so have safety
measures put in place at airports all over the world. As the commercialization
and evolution of airports all around the world into what resembles a strong similarity to some of the systems in place around the US airports. As stated in our book Aviation and The Role of Government “Large airport terminals boast 85 million passengers passing through annually safely” (Lawrence et al., 2015). While we may have many near incursions still on a daily basis the
fact that our numbers have increased by 10-fold in the last 20 years shows that not only the communication has improved considerably but that the importance of understanding newer rules and regulations in place surrounding VFR and IFR ratings as well as their applications through new

dropout rates and lagging performance required the
county to address these problems on the individual
student level.
Department of Education
But that meant first finding the students who needed
help, and doing so before their problems led them to
drop out of the Hamilton County school system. At the
end of the day, there's no one better positioned to
sense when the student is in academic trouble than a
teacher or counselor with whom students have a direct
relationship. The trouble is, warning signs are often
complex and cumulative in nature, thus escaping the
notice of frontline educators and administrators. Add
to that the everyday challenges of running a classroom,
and it's all the more understandable how problem
students can fly “under the radar" until it's too late.

Case Study 1: Forecasting
Your line manager, Ms Lionheart, has collected and scrutinised performance data for the
company. She was concerned that the inventories were high for certain products which had
resulted in significant price reductions and losses for the company. At the same time, the
company had run out of stock for other items early in the season resulting in unsatisfied
customers and lost sales. Ms Lionheart has concluded that the problem was not with the
specific products carried in the stock, but with the quantities ordered by the procurement
department for two popular products; Dog Ball Launcher and Lightweight Dog Lead.
Dog Ball Launcher is a product carried by the company for the past four years. Quarterly
demand data for the past four years are shown in table 1. Last year the company seemed to
always be out of stock for this item. The model used by the procurement department to
forecast demand for this product over the last two years has been Multiplicative Seasonal…

Chick-n-Gravy Dinner Line

received
complaints from
numerous
supermarkets about the firm's Chick-n-Gravy dinners. The
manager then asked her assistant, Ann, to investigate the
matter and to report her recommendations.
Ann's first task was to determine what problems were
generating the complaints. The majority of complaints
centered on five defects: underfilled packages, a missing
label,
spills/mixed items, unacceptable taste,
and
improperly sealed packages.
Next, she took samples of dinners from the two production
lines and examined each sample, making note of any
defects that she found. A summary of those results is
shown in the table.
The data resulted from inspecting approximately 800 frozen
dinners. What should Ann recommend to the manager?

Case Study Scenario # 8: Big money maker
A woman is sexually harassed by a top-level senior executive in a large company. She sues the company,
and during settlement discussions she is offered an extremely large monetary settlement. In the
agreement, the woman is required to confirm that the executive did nothing wrong, and after the
agreement is signed the woman is prohibited from discussing anything about the incident publicly. Before
the date scheduled to sign the settlement agreement, the woman's lawyer mentions that she has heard the
executive has done this before, and the settlement amount is very large because the company probably
had a legal obligation to dismiss the executive previously. The company however wants to keep the
executive because he is a big money maker for the company.
What are the issues of integrity, ethics and law posed in the case study? What options does the woman
have, and what should she do and why?

To contain the spreading of this highly infectiousdisease, governments have resorted to restriction of dine-in hours, closure of bars and pubs, quarantine of incoming passengers, lock-down of entire cities as in the case of London, bringingglobal economic activities to a standstill. The long, eagerly-awaited news of vaccines that can effectively combat the Covid-19 virus havefinally been confirmed. However, given the massive scale of the pandemic, inoculating even tenpercent of the world’s population would take 2-3 years. To make the best use of the limited supply of vaccines, the head of World Health Organizationasks his staff to develop a priority list and answer the following questions.Q: From a utilitarian point of view, who do you think should be in the priority group?

Manila Bay Beach Nourishment Project
After years of being known for its polluted waters, Manila Bay suddenly got a facelift as the government
decided to take a big risk by overlaying mounds of artificial white sand (dolomite) on a part of the bay's
naturally gray shoreline.
This project, which is spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), was
instantly met with harsh disapproval. In September, the overlaying of the dolomite in Manila Bay beach or the
beach nourishment project caught public attention, stirring curiosity and setting off waves of people flocking
to the area to get a glimpse of the "white sands".
Many criticized the project, throwing allegations at the DENR, calling the project a health hazard and a waste
of public funds.
But the DENR emphasized that the beach nourishment with the use of dolomite is a significant component of
the rehabilitation aimed to protect the coastal resources in the area and…

This has activated a person’s allergy, caused some people to develop hyper airway sensitivity and musculoskeletal disorder. Further, there have been ventilation issues and no running water. Some staff complained that they often have to fetch water in buckets to use the bathroom during work hours. This has been reported to management, but nothing has been done. When it comes to safety, in most cases, no one seems to make it a priority in the public sector. Some persons complained of tripping on smooth tiles, stairs and more. There are building regulations; however, not many follow these codes. Most ministry buildings are old and wooden. As it concerns the…

Artemio was appointed CEO of Rafol’s Enterprise upon the death of his father.
The company went public under the leaders of Artemio and had to adapt to being open and
transparent to outside investors. There were pressures from the shareholders to reduce cost and increase
profits. In response, Artemio implemented cost cutting measures including downsizing by means of enforcing
early retirement of employees who he felt could not cope in the move to digitize the operation of business.
As expected, most of the employees were not happy and this affected the morale of their employees. Artemio sought the assistance of Ely Buenaobra, the VP of HR. Ely suggested a comprehensive program wherein it is not just the managers who would be evaluated based on achieving results but even the employees by means of demonstrating to their employees that their performance affects company results. This in turn will show to the shareholders that the company’s primary…
