Fort Scott, city (1990 pop. 8,362), Bourbon co., SE Kansas, on Marmaton R., and 28 mi/45 km N of Pittsburg, near Mo. state line; 37°49'N 94°42'W. RR junction. Trade and shipping center for agr. region; mfg. (apparel, cement, metal prods.); wood planing. Quarries (cement rock, flagstone). Fort Scott Community Col. City grew up around military post that was est. 1842, abandoned in 1855, and rebuilt during Civil War. Inc. 1860.
