Folsom Lake, Sacramento co., central Calif., at junction of North Fork and South Fork American rivers, at Folsom, 20 mi/32 km NE of Sacramento; 38°41'N 121°09'W. Extends NE; has 2 arms: North Fork (c.15 mi/24 km long) and South Fork. Max. capacity 1,000,000 acre-ft. Formed by Folsom Dam (268 ft/82 m), built by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for irrigation, power production, and flood control. Surrounded by Folsom L. State Recreation Area.
