Dalton Highway

Dalton Highway, road, N central to N Alaska, project road for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The gravel road begins in S on Elliot Highway, W of Livengood, 60 mi/97 km NW of Fairbanks. The 414–mi/666–km road was constructed in only 5 months in 1974 by the Alyeska Pipeline Company. From Livengood to its S terminus at Valdez, the pipeline follows the preexisting Elliot, Steese, and Richardson highways. Going N, the road crosses the Yukon R., the Arctic Circle, and the Brooks Range before terminating at Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse, on the Arctic Ocean. Center for oil and gas development activities. The first 211 mi/340 km N to Disaster Creek, in the Brooks Range, gives access to Gates of the Arctic Natl. Park and Preserve. This is the only highway in the Alaska system that extends N of Yukon R. and the only U.S. highway to reach the Arctic Circle.
