Berrien (BER-ee-en), county (1,580 sq mi/4,092 sq km; 1990 pop. 161,378), extreme SW Mich.; St. Joseph. Bounded S by Ind. state line, W by L. Michigan; 41°56'N 86°35'W. Drained by St. Joseph and Paw Paw rivers and small Galien R. Fruit-growing region (peaches, apples, pears, plums, grapes, cherries, strawberries, melons); also corn, soybeans; hogs, cattle; dairy prods. Mfg. at Niles and St. Joseph. Resorts. Western Dunes State Park in SW; Paw Paw L. in far N. Organized 1831. Nuclear power plants: Cook 1 and Cook 2 are 11 mi/18 km S of Benton Harbor; use cooling water from L. Michigan.
