Fort Saskatchewan (sas-KA-chuh-wahn), city (1991 pop. 12,078), central Alta., Canada, on North Saskatchewan R., satellite community 15 mi/24 km NE of Edmonton; 53°43'N 113°13'W. Coal mining, oil and gas, iron ore, and nonferrous smelting and refining; mfg. (fertilizer); grain elevators, mixed farming, cattle, barley. First fort of the North West Mounted Police N of Calgary was established here. Elk Island Natl. Park is 10 mi/16 km ESE.
