Effigy Mounds National Monument, park (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), NE Iowa, atop bluffs overlooking Mississippi R, just N of McGregor. Prehistoric Indian mounds 2 ft/0.6 m–4 ft/1.2 m high, up to 200 ft/61 m in diameter; many of them are in shapes of birds and bears, and are believed to be burial mounds. Artifacts (including bone, copper, and stone tools) have been found. Est. 1949.
