El Tajín, ruins, Papantla de Olarte, Veracruz state, E central Mexico; 20°28'N 97°28'W. This site is the remains of pre-Columbian Totonac civilization (fl. 9th–13th cents). The site is partly restored. The most impressive relic is Pyramid of the Niches or El Tajín, a spectacular pyramid in 7 rectangular tiers, one for each day of the year, lined with niches that contained small idols.
