Clair Engle Lake, reservoir (28 sq mi/73 sq km), Trinity co., N Calif., on Trinity R., bet. Salmon (W) and Trinity (E) mts., in Whiskeytown Shasta–Trinity Natl. Recreation Area, in Trinity Natl. Forest, 24 mi/39 km NW of Redding; c.15 mi/24 km long; 40°48'N 122°44'W. Max. capacity 2,761,000 acre-ft. Formed by Trinity Dam (458 ft/140 m high), built (1962) by the Bureau of Reclamation for irrigation, flood control, and power generation.
