El Morro (el MO-ro), natl. monument (1 sq mi/2.6 sq km), Cibola co., W N.Mex.; 42 mi/68 km W of Grants, in Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation. Anasazi villages were once situated on this mesa. Sandstone “Inscription Rock” with inscriptions of Spanish explorers and American pioneers and cent.-old Indian petroglyphs. Also pre-Columbian petroglyphs and pueblo ruins. Proclaimed 1906.
