Carmel-by-the-Sea, city (1990 pop. 4,239), Monterey co., S Calif., 5 mi/8 km SSW of Monterey, S of Monterey Peninsula on Carmel Bay, at mouth of Carmel R.; 36°33'N 121°55'W. Agr. (grapes, strawberries, vegetables; dairying); mfg. (printing and publishing); winery; tourism, recreation. It is a tourist spot as well as an artists’ and writers’ community. Art shows and an annual Bach festival are held in the village. The bay, named in 1602 by Carmelite friars in Vizcaíno’s expedition, is famed for its beauty. Mission San Carlos Borromeo, site of burial place of Father Junípero Serra. World-famous Pebble Beach golf course to N. Also called Carmel. Inc. 1916.
