| Dainzú (dain-ZOO), historic site, in central Oaxaca, Mexico, 16 mi/25 km SE of Oaxaca, on a dirt road, off Mexican Highway 190, bet. Oaxaca and Mitla. These ruins date from 600 A.D. and are currently being excavated. The site was occupied until A.D. 900. There is a huge pyramid structure and a ballcourt with art work portraying the ball players. There are also 50 carved stones, made around 300 B.C., at the base of the pyramid. The site has not been restored. |
