Green River, city (1990 pop. 12,711), Sweetwater co., SW Wyo., on Green R., near mouth of Bitter Creek and just above headwaters of Flaming Gorge Reservoir, 13 mi/21 km WSW of Rock Springs; 41°31'N 109°28'W. Elev. c.6,100 ft/1,859 m. RR center; shipping center for sheep and cattle in forest and agr. area. Mfg. (printing and publishing, consumer goods, bldg. materials). Trona mining, source of soda ash. Starting point of John Wesley Powell expedition (1869). Flaming Gorge Natl. Recreation Area to S (visitors’ center in town). Developed with arrival of RR. Founded 1868 near Overland stage route; inc. 1891.
