Charlevoix
 
 
Charlevoix (SHAHR-luh-voi), county (1,390 sq mi/3,600 sq km; 1990 pop. 21,468), NW Mich.; Charlevoix. Bounded NW by L. Michigan; 45°28'N 85°27'W; drained by short Boyne and Jordan rivers. Includes Beaver Islands group. Dairying; agr. (cattle, poultry; potatoes, cherries, apples, seed); iron foundries, plastics prods. Some mfg. at Charlevoix, Boyne City, and East Jordan. Flour, lumber mills; fisheries. Resorts. Charlevoix, dominant feature in W half of co., and Walloon, in N forms part of boundary, W Emmet co., lakes (fishing, boating, winter sports) nearby; Fisherman’s Isl. State Park in W on L. Michigan; Young State Park at co. center near Boyne City. Organized 1869. Big Rock Point nuclear power plant (initial criticality September 27, 1962) is 4 mi/6.4 km NE of Charlevoix. Uses cooling water from L. Michigan and has a max. dependable capacity of 67 MWe. It has the lowest capacity of any nuclear power plant in operation in the U.S. today.
