Costa Mesa
 
 
Costa Mesa, city (1990 pop. 96,357), Orange co., S Calif., a suburb 30 mi/48 km SE of downtown Los Angeles, and 10 mi/16 km S of Anaheim, on Pacific Ocean; 33°40'N 117°55'W. At mouth of and drained by Santa Ana R. A transportation hub, the city is marked by residential growth and mfg. (apparel, canned foods, electronics, pharmaceuticals, audio prods.). In addition to the research laboratories here, huge corporate complexes and shopping areas were constructed in the 1980s, contributing to a economic boon in the county. Orange Coast Col. (2-year) is in Costa Mesa, as is a mus. featuring innovative cars. John Wayne (Orange co.) Airport to E. Huntington State Beach in W Newport Bay to S. Site of South Coast Plaza/Crystal Court, one of the largest shopping centers in the U.S. The city was named for its coastal location. Inc. 1953.
