Braintree (BRAIN-tree), town (1990 pop. 33,836), E Mass., a suburb 4 mi/6.4 km SE of Boston; 42°12'N 71°00'W. Metal, rubber, and paper mfg., electric and medical machinery, shoes, books, building materials. Included Quincy (birthplace of John Adams and John Quincy Adams) until 1792 and Randolph until 1793. John Hancock and Gen. Sylvanus Thayer, superintendent of West Point (1817–1833), were b. here. The Thayer Acad. here was founded by the general. Includes villages of East and South Braintree.
