Barnstable
 
 
Barnstable, county (1,305 sq mi/3,380 sq km; 1990 pop. 186,605), SE Mass., coextensive with Cape Cod; Barnstable; 41°43'N 70°15'W. Co. airport in Hyannis. Summer resort area with many fine beaches; its small winter pop. is swelled by a great influx of summer visitors and residents. Plastic prods., concrete prods., machinery, navigation equip. Some agr., mostly in S; large quantities of cranberries are grown. Some fishing, particularly at Provincetown. In early 19th cent. a shipbuilding, shipping, and whaling center. Business center, Hyannis. Formed 1685.
