Dade, county (2,429 sq mi/6,291 sq km; 1990 pop. 1,937,094), SE Fla., Miami; 25°36'N 80°30'W. Lowland area bordered by Fla. Keys enclosing Biscayne Bay (E) and part of Fla. Bay (S). Coastal fringe is the heavily urbanized Miami metropolitan area. Interior lies in the Everglades and includes part of Everglades Natl. Park. Mfg. includes food and wood prods., construction materials, textiles. S anchor of the urban area that lines the coast of SE Fla.; has received infusion of immigrants since 1970s, mainly from Central and S. Amer. Natl. Hurricane Center of the National Weather Service is located here in the uninc. suburb of Sweetwater, c.7 mi/11.3 km W of central Miami. Formed 1836. In late 1997 its name was changed to Miami-Dade co.
