Haileybury, town (1991 pop. 4,962),  Timiskaming dist., E Ont., central Canada, on L. Timiskaming, 80 mi/129 km N of North Bay. Distributing and residential center for rich mining region, with pulp, lumber milling. Ski resort. Airfield. Silver, gold, cobalt are mined in immediate vicinity. Site of mining school. Developed after discovery (1903) of silver at nearby Cobalt; inc. 1905. Town was almost wholly destroyed (1922) by fire. | | | | Capital city or county seat is shown by the symbol |
