Edwards Plateau, SW Texas, SE extension of the Great Plains, lying to S and SE of the South Plains (S Llano Estacado), and bounded on S by the Rio Grande valley, SE by the Balcones Escarpment, overlooking the coastal plain; drained by Colorado, Concho, San Saba, Llano, Nueces, Guadalupe rivers. Max. elev. c.2,500 ft/762 m (in Edwards co.). W extension, across canyon of Pecos R., is the Stockton Plateau country (elev. c.2,000 ft/610 m4,000 ft/1,219 m) of W Texas bounded S by the Rio Grande and W by Davis Mts. Much of it semiarid, plateau is largely devoted to stock raising (cattle, sheep, goats) and is chief mohair producing area of state. In region just above escarpment on SE, streams have carved the scenic terrain of the hill country, known for its many springs and its wild game hunting.
