| Dismal Swamp Canal, c.22 mi/35 km long, SE Va. and NE N.C., Chesapeake city, Va. and Camden co., N.C., W branch of Intracoastal Waterway; connects Hampton Roads harbor and Chesapeake Bay in N (via Elizabeth R. estuary and its S branch and Deep Creek) with Albemarle Sound (via Pasquotank R. estuary); completed 1828 through then–densely wooded Dismal Swamp, or Great Dismal Swamp. |
