Azua (AH-zoo-ah), officially Azua de Compostela, city (1993 pop. 46,420), Azua prov., SW Dominican Republic, 3 mi/4.8 km from its port on the Caribbean Sea (Ocoa Bay), at S foot of the Sierra de Ocoa, 55 mi/89 km W of Santo Domingo; 18°27'N 70°43'W. Leading town of the SW; trades in agr. prods. (sugarcane, coffee, rice, beans, corn, resin, fruit, medicinal plants; timber). Has internatl. airport. Ruins of anc. convent. Founded nearby in 1504; later destroyed by earthquake and moved to present site.
