Amite (ai-MEET), town (1994 pop. 4,640), Tangipahoa parish, SE La., 45 mi/72 km NE of Baton Rouge and on Tangipahoa R.; 30°44'N 90°31'W. Ships squash, jalapeño peppers, sweet potatoes, fruit, strawberries; dairy prods.; mfg. (lumber, signs), publishing and printing, oyster processing. Sandy Hollow State Wildlife Area to NE. Amite R. Diversion Canal. On the Delisle Map of 1718. Settled 1836, inc. 1861.
