Amite (uh-MIT), county (731 sq mi/1,893 sq km; 1990 pop. 13,328), SW Miss.; Liberty; 31°10'N 90°47'W. Borders S on state of La.; bounded in NW by Homochitto R.; drained by Tangipahoa and Tickfaw rivers, East and West forks Amite R. (join just S of state line). Agr. (cotton, corn; cattle, catfish; dairying; timber). Includes part of Homochitto Natl. Forest in NW. Formed 1809.
