Brownwood
 
 
Brownwood, city (1990 pop. 18,387), Brown co., 62 mi/100 km SW of Abilene, on Pecan Bayou, central Texas; 31°43'N 98°58'W. Elev. 1,342 ft/409 m. RR junction; industrial community (printing, fabricated metal prods., furniture, beverages, electronic equip.); processes and ships cattle, wool, poultry, sheep, Angora goats, wheat, vegetables, nuts, and meat from the surrounding agr. area. Nearby L. Brownwood is a large reservoir used for irrigation as well as for fishing and boating. Oil and gas. Howard Payne Univ. is there; the Douglas MacArthur Acad. of Freedom is on its campus. Inc. 1876
