Bernice (buhr-NEES), town (1990 pop. 1,543), Union parish, N La., 20 mi/32 km N of Ruston; 32°50'N 92°40'W. Logging; mfg. (furniture parts, wood chips, lumber, uniforms); in agr. area (dairying; hogs, cattle; vegetables). Bernice oil and gas field nearby. Unit of Kisatchie Natl. Forest to NW. Bayou D’Arbonne L. reservoir to E (state park). Settled 1841, inc. 1889. Formerly known as Big Woods.
