Brainerd, city (1990 pop. 12,353), Crow Wing co., central Minn., 55 mi/89 km N of St. Cloud, on the Mississippi R.; 46°21'N 94°11'W. Elev. 1,212 ft/369 m. In a pine-forested and lake region. Agr. (dairying; poultry; oats, wild rice, alfalfa); mfg. (fabricated metal and metal prods., construction materials, lumber and wood prods., plastic prods., foods and beverages, fishing tackle; printing and publishing). Founded (1870) by the Northern Pacific RR, it is still a RR center with repair shops. Brainerd Community Col., Brainerd State School and Hosp. to E. Paul Bunyan Amusement Center here. Cuyuna Iron Range to NE; Crow Wing State Park and Camp Ripley Military Reservation to SW; Pillsbury State Forest to W; Crow Wing State Forest to NE. Inc. 1881.
