Beaver Islands
 
 
Beaver Islands, archipelago (c.70 mi/113 km long) in NE L. Michigan, Mich.; extends SW-E, from 20 mi/32 km W of Leelanau peninsula to c.30 mi/48 km W of Straits of Mackinac. Part of Charlevoix co. Includes Manitou Isls., Fox Isls., Beaver Isl. (c.13 mi/21 km long, largest of group). NW and N of Beaver Isl. are Garden Isl. (5 mi/8 km long, 2.5 mi/4 km wide; Indian burial grounds); High Isl. (3.5 mi/5.6 km long,2 mi/3.2 km wide); Hog Isl. (3 mi/4.8 km long, 1.5 mi/2.4 km. wide; bass fishing); and Gull Isl. (1.5 mi/2.4 km long, 1/2 mi/4/5 km wide). N Manitou and S Manitou isls. are part of Sleeping Bear Dunes Natl. Lakeshore (remainder on mainland); Garden Isl. and Hog Isl. comprise the Michigan Isls. Natl. Wildlife Refuge.
