Bradshaw, village, Baltimore co., central Md., 15 mi/24 km ENE of downtown Baltimore. The Marquis de Lafayette ordered 4 local men arrested here in 1781 for guiding raiding parties of Br. soldiers from a fleet anchored in Gunpowder Creek. One, Walter Pickett (or Pigot), a miller, was hanged; the 3 others apparently escaped. One, John Paul, a wealthy landowner, reportedly had the aid of a lady who hid him under her hoop skirts. Site of a jousting competition attracting riders from all over the state who spear metal rings of various sizes for “womanhood and Christianity.” The winner of a race among women riders chooses the “King of Love and Beauty.” Gunpowder Falls State Park is nearby.
