Fort Smith
 
 
Fort Smith, SW region (235,636 sq mi/610,455 sq km; 1991 pop. 27,553), N.W.T., Canada, Fort Smith. The region extends E from the Yukon to the upper Thelon R. and N from Alta. to encompass most of Great Bear L. Encompassing the S Mackenzie Mts. and the S portion of the Mackenzie R., it is a transitional zone bet. the forests of the S and the arctic tundra of the N. The most prosperous and populous of the N regions, its main industries are mining, tourism, lumbering, fur trapping, and fishing. The Fort Smith region, formerly part of Mackenzie dist., was created by the territorial govt. in the early 1970s.
