Gretna (GRET-nuh), city (1990 pop. 17,208), SE La., on the Mississippi R.; Jefferson parish; 29°55'N 90°03'W. Elev. 5 ft/2 m. Suburb opposite and 1 mi/2 km SSE of downtown New Orleans. Ocean and river shipping port; RR junction. Ferry and bridge connection across river. Marble and granite production; mfg. of chemicals, food, printing and publishing. La. RR mus. Founded in 1836 as Mechanicsham, Gretna merged with McDonoghville in 1913.
