Barnegat Light
 
 
Barnegat Light (BAHR-nuh-guht), borough (1990 pop. 675), Ocean co., E N.J., at N end of Long Beach isl., on Barnegat Inlet (entrance to Barnegat Bay), and 14 mi/23 km SSE of Toms River; 39°45'N 74°06'W. Fishing. Site of abandoned Barnegat Lighthouse (1855), replaced (1930) by lightship, then replaced by a “Texas Tower,” which was destroyed by a storm; 2 tower attendants died in the storm. A floating light 15 mi/24 km off the coast now serves as beacon. It is now a state park. Formerly Barnegat City.
